Syria condemns 'Cruel Actions' of Israel in Gaza

Damascus (AFP / Reuters) - Syria condemned the "atrocities" of Israel in the Gaza Strip, where a series of air strikes on Wednesday killed a Hamas military chief and at least six other Palestinians, calling for action from the international community.

"The Syrian government condemned the heinous atrocities committed by the Israeli army against the Palestinian Arab people in Gaza," he said in a statement carried by the official SANA news agency.

They urged the national community to "pressure Israel to stop the aggression against our people in the volatile Gaza Strip."

The revelation comes after a wave of government air strikes that hit Israeli targets in the Gaza Strip, the Hamas commander, Ahmed Jaabari, and two children were among the dead.

"Although the risk of aggression, Syria will always be loyal to a national one for the history of the Palestinian people to recover their stolen lands and establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," he said.

Damascus has long supported the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas which rules Gaza, but opposition activists said that Hamas militants joined the rebels fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. (Kn / ml)
